Blessed by Divine Inspiration

Here’s another lesson regarding divine inspiration for me.
Even the day before yesterday I wanted to write a new blog article and yesterday it dawned on me that there might be a topic on which God perhaps wants me to write. So I was waiting for more information from His Spirit. However, another day passed and God remained silent.

As I awoke today in the morning, the topic was still on my mind, yet I felt more and more uneasy. Truth be told, I was also getting more and more impatient with God who let me wait so long. During my prayer time with Him, He nudged me more and more to be COMPLETELY HONEST about my feelings toward Him. I admit that it is NOT easy to tell God that His “behavior” and silence frustrate me. But I know that I cannot hide anything from Him and that He usually only changes my heart if I dare to speak frankly about everything that concerns me.

Well, I also know that I can only write about things I have experienced on my own and thus I feel nudged to describe the lesson I have been learning recently. It has not merely to do with the inspiration to write, no, it goes far beyond, touching every aspect of life which God wants to guide so that we can enjoy His peace and every divine blessing that comes to us as the fruit of His Spirit (Gal 5:22-23) as a permanent condition, even in our time here on earth.

Let me begin with the following Bible verse. Jesus once rejoiced by shouting out,

“I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.” (Lk 10:21 ESV)

To put it plainly, whether we think we are wise as this world sees wisdom – or not, whether we have or had access to good school education – or not, whether we have college degrees, riches, and fame – or not, these things mean nothing in the eyes of God since He shows no partiality (Rom 2:11). By sending His own Son as the Savior for the WHOLE world (cf. 1 Jn 2:2), He saves those who do not lean on their own understanding (Prv 3:5) but dare to trust in Him whose ways and thoughts cannot be understood by any human being (Is 55:8-9).

Matthew Henry wrote in his Concise Edition as an explanation on the Gospel of Luke, chapter 10,

Verses 17-24 All our victories over Satan, are obtained by power derived from Jesus Christ, and he must have all the praise. But let us beware of spiritual pride, which has been the destruction of many. Our Lord rejoiced at the prospect of the salvation of many souls. It was fit that particular notice should be taken of that hour of joy; there were few such, for He was a man of sorrows: in that hour in which he saw Satan fall, and heard of the good success of his ministers, in that hour he rejoiced. He has ever resisted the proud, and given grace to the humble. The more simply dependent we are on the teaching, help, and blessing of the Son of God, the more we shall know both of the Father and of the Son; the more blessed we shall be in seeing the glory, and hearing the words of the Divine Saviour; and the more useful we shall be made in promoting his cause.

[Colored emphasis mine]

Actually, it is not easy to let human reasoning and thinking aside and ask God for His help in EVERYTHING. No human being would ever do that unless God provided countless situations in which all our habitual solution strategies do not work any longer. To put it briefly, God leads us into situations and lets us “fail” (as the world sees failure) so that we can eventually get spiritually successful by simply relying on Him.

Q: “But how do we know that we indeed have relied on Him and not on ourselves as we usually do?”

A: “By being able to maintain His peace – constantly.”

So simple that answer, I know. However, this is what God has been teaching me recently. Every day there were many given situations in which I could have reacted as usual or could have helped several different people who wanted various things from me. All their requests seemed to be good in God’s sight – at least, these were Susanne’s thoughts – yet I simultaneously realized that I couldn’t succeed in pleasing everyone unless my day consisted of 48 hours. So I had to make a choice and that was, in fact, difficult for me. Confronted with many hurting people whom I wanted to help, I felt that I was losing God’s peace as I was thinking about HOW and WHEN to help them (i.e., family, friends, neighbors, internet connections). Admittedly, I needed quite some time to give up on these thoughts that were preying on my mind.

Finally, my recent lesson learned has been THIS:

Look at God first before you decide what to do. Let your heart and mind be enwrapped in His divine peace, and starting from that point, let God nudge you to do or to stop doing – whatever. As soon as His peace is withdrawn, run back to Him, and seek Him until you feel His peaceful presence again.

No, dear reader, this is not that easy. We can get so confused and busy in our doing that we tend to believe Satan instead, who continually tries to convince us that our life is worthless in God’s sight if we stop doing good works for Him. But the truth is this, our worth lies not in our doing, it lies in our being – IN Christ, our lovely Lord, who promised to keep us in a restful condition.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Mt 11:28-30 ESV)

So for now, I hope that I will be able to run back into His loving arms as soon as I perceive that the burden is getting heavy and heavier. May God help me and all those who want to enjoy the freedom and peace only our gentle Savior can give.
