A.W. Tozer, Buddhist quote, church, church discipline, exhortation, exorcism, experience, following Jesus, sin, Tony Puccio, true faith
Today my special thanks go to Michael who provided proper Scriptures and their exposition for me as I was searching for the Biblical confirmation of my recent experiences and to Tony who pointed out to me a great article by A.W. Tozer. At first I want to offer you a quote of that entry. If you’re interested to dip into the whole exposition on the difference between preaching the cross as it once was and still should be preached and the watered-down version that can be heard in many of today’s churches, just follow the link below.
God cannot approve any of the fruits of sin, however innocent they may appear or beautiful to the eyes of men. God salvages the individual by liquidating him and then raising him again to newness of life. That evangelism which draws friendly parallels between the ways of God and the ways of men is false to the Bible and cruel to the souls of its hearers. The faith of Christ does not parallel the world, it intersects it. In coming to Christ we do not bring our old life up onto a higher plane; we leave it at the cross. The corn of wheat must fall into the ground and die.
(A.W. Tozer, “The Old Cross and the New”, see http://www.ldolphin.org/oldcross.html)
I say “Yes and amen” to these words. In order to illustrate the delusion which both churches and believers might find themselves in, I’ll raise a few questions. Please, keep in mind that any lifestyle that contradicts what was described particularly in the New Testament reveals having been authored by the father of lies, aka Satan, himself.
(1) Can someone who lives in sexual sin claim to have received the Spirit of God? Should we seek (spiritual) fellowship with such a one? Decide by yourself. The apostle Paul admonishes the Corinthians of the danger to be affected by the sin of others as he wrote the following,
Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.” (1 Cor 5:6-13 ESV)
Don’t we underestimate the influence of unclean and evil spirits in others when we seek to get into closer contact, not even fellowship, with them. If these spirits can find any open door inside our own spirits, they will run into it and not let go of us until Christ exorcises them, either personally or through those who have already received the faith of Jesus Christ as He Himself explained it here,
And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover. (Mk 16:17-18 ESV)
(2) May someone who does not provide for his own family, although he would be able to, rightly call himself a Christian?
“And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in [them]; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” (2 Corinthians 6:15-16 KJV)
We may ask, “What is an infidel? Are they in the church among Christians?” YES!!! This word translated “infidel” was most often translated “unbeliever.”
“But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.” (1 Timothy 5:8 KJV)
Attention! Here is another admonition we should take to heart. The apostle Paul also said,
Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is living in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you, we did not eat any one’s bread without paying, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not burden any of you. It was not because we have not that right, but to give you in our conduct an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: If any one will not work, let him not eat. For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work in quietness and to earn their own living. (2 Thessalonians 3:1-12 RSVA)
(3) Are we sure we should keep up with this world’s views when we lie and cheat in order to not lose our job? Recently I had an interesting exchange with a person who told me if you want to be someone in this world, you cannot get to the top without lying and cheating. It appears nobody is interested in seeing real Christians in top positions. Humility, unconditional love, and honesty do not qualify for those who want to be part of the ruling upper class of our capitalist society. Instead, those who are at the top, whether in politics, in commerce, or hierarchical churches (!), they would hardly have succeeded in outdoing others without applying to Satan’s strategies. Just remember Jesus’ temptation regarding the kingdoms of this world and their glory, (cf. Mt 4:8-10). From hence we might see that we cannot serve mammon AND God simultaneously, that is impossible (Lk 16:13).
(4) May someone who left their spouse for any other reason than having been abused or cheated on definitely expect to be blessed by God in the context of re-marriage although the former spouse has been hurt deeply? In order to illustrate my last question, I offer you here another interesting quote I just found on the internet. I knew that quote before, but today I was looking for the author who might have said this because he was unknown to me before. Indeed, I was amazed to see that the following words are ascribed to be of Buddhist origin, not even of Christianity’s! But the very essence is God’s truth. He who has ears might hear it. We read,
It is impossible to build one’s own happiness on the unhappiness of others. This perspective is at the heart of Buddhist teachings.
Interesting… Seems to be biblical too, doesn’t it?
Here I want to close and ask you, my dear readers, whether you might have any ideas about one or more Biblical confirmations/Scriptures regarding this quote right above. Please, feel free to weigh in.

My, my, my! That A.W. Tozer quote was most exceptional! I clicked to read more. The other day in a post of mine as I wrote on my moment of surrender in 2007, I made the comment that He made no demand on me. That sentence has bothered me since. In the flash of time, at the moment, He did not. I knew nothing of what any of this was. But fast forward and catch a glimpse of all these days since and there have been many demands made on me, the new me, the Christ in me, for we don’t do these in and of our own selves any longer. Anyway, that being said, this touched me from the link you shared:
“The old cross is a symbol of death. It stands for the abrupt, violent end of a human being. The man in Roman times who took up his cross and started down the road had already said good-by to his friends. He was not coming back. He was going out to have it ended. The cross made no compromise, modified nothing, spared nothing; it slew all of the man, completely and for good. It did not try to keep on good terms with its victim. It struck cruel and hard, and when it had finished its work, the man was no more.”
At my surrender, and no doubt anyone’s, we do not grasp the fullness of what is transpiring. But, by God and in His vast mercy & grace, it all unfolds to us. The death into His new life in us. I read a Charles Spurgeon sermon the other day and in it he wrote: hmm, I won’t be able to quote it exactly. Our Lord Jesus Christ redeemed the whole man, not one part. And He will not leave any part of His purchased possession in the hands of the enemy. Amazing!!
Thanks for the post!

You’re welcome, dear Becky! ❤
Thanks a bunch for your very helpful contribution on here. That quote you pasted touched me too and what you told from Spurgeon’s sermon expresses the hard truth perfectly.
You are right. When we surrender to God, He reveals His love for us. Disciplining comes later and it is NOT fun, yet necessary for all children of God. Without discipline, we are no children. For it is written,
“And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.” (Heb 12:5-8 ESV)

Susanne, it was also a good reminder of the life we are to live while we are here. There is much grace, yes, but there is no compromise.

Paul wrote,
Sometimes we get so hungry for fellowship that we are willing to try and have it with those who are not holding fast to the Head, who is Christ! All our spiritual nourishment comes down to each of us from Christ! Unless each member IS connected to the Head there is no walking together in the Light as HE is in the Light and THERE IS NO FELLOWSHIP! This never works. In fact when we come together with them it ends up for the worse and NOT for the better (1 Cor. 11:17).
Thank you, Susanne for your very timely article. I was about to settle for something that would have not ended well. God bless you for listening to HIS voice and passing it on. I love the fellowship we have on here in the Spirit!

You’re very welcome, my brother. I cannot write unless the Lord fills my empty mind with His words about certain issues. You might have heard about the struggles I often have to fight against dark demonic forces before I can publish articles on deeper spiritual topics, all the more if it is an exhortation like this post. The flaming darts of the evil one are not easy to endure because they weaken the flesh extremely, but God uses every attack for His own purposes and finally I see it is all good again, that is, His peace and joy fill my mind and heart and I feel spiritually more alive than before, simply because I obeyed Him. Or as Jesus quoted the OT by saying,
“‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Mt 4:4 ESV)
And later Jesus gave us a warning as for the consequences of NOT obeying Him as He said,
“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.” (Jn 3:36 ESV)
Michael, I have always loved that Scripture you pasted, even the whole chapter 2 of Colossians. Thank you very much for sharing these verses with me. Fits perfectly! 🙂
As for true fellowship in the Spirit, I believe, there is nothing in this life and in this world that could ever be compared to the smallest gifts God can bestow on His children. This world and the “pleasures” it offers have become completely tasteless for me. But our fellowship in the Spirit IS a foretaste of heaven, isn’t it?

Michael, listening to His voice once again, I felt nudged, or let’s say “urged” by the Holy Spirit to mention that you provided some proper Scriptures and a short explanation in my article above. Thank you for having listened to His voice by sending these verses via email to me. I really needed some biblical confirmation for what I had only “felt” in my own spirit before.
Let us always walk in His Light together, dear brother!

I thought about your post for awhile and then this morning I heard Gods spirit being in me say–Read Isaiah 54–so I read it and this is what I got out of it after Father reminding me of 54 follows 53–Now I God am your husband-I bought you back in my compassion-No more anger from me-This is my new covenant with you-I will make you shine and you will listen to me-You will not live in shame-You will have my rightness reproduced in you by ME-I will make you to be acceptable—In the teachings of the cross we need to understand the difference between what was taught by Christ to his followers-who did not really get it–and what Paul taught to the people who already were in the flock–and this is what he wanted them to get–your already in and you got to be dead to your own efforts to get in–your right behavior will come because Father will cause it to come–even though it may take time–when it does not show up Paul would say–examine yourself–Christ does live inside of you–right? So lets see some evidence–unless of course your an infidel.

I am glad you added that part about examining ourselves, Ken. Indeed, we need to see some evidence of Christ living in us. Very good! ⭐
Only talking or writing about Him won’t get us to heaven, will it? Either we have received His Spirit by grace or we have not (yet). We can even pray about receiving the Holy Spirit (Lk 11:13). But nothing is worse than someone who claims to be in Christ and having received His Spirit, yet keeps living an unholy life through which he defiles other sheep who are all unsuspecting regarding Satan’s cunning wiles. Only God-given repentance can help here. Such people can be sure that I pray for them, but that I will never seek their fellowship in the Spirit… unless they repent. And repentance should bring forth some fruit, right? Here we have it again what you so properly said, my brother, EVIDENCE is needed.
Very thought-provoking for me, your comment – thank you so much! 🙂

Yes, Susanne, our fellowship in the Spirit is truly a taste of heaven for…
“That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that you also may have fellowship with us: and truly OUR FELLOWSHIP IS WITH THE FATHER AND WITH THE SON Jesus Christ.” (1 John 1:3 KJ2000)
It is a joy to know you and those who comment on here.

First Corinthians chapter 2 nails it, the carnal and still sensual mind cannot grasp the depths of God’s love. They will get it all wrong if someone tells them about the mystery which is Christ in us. Or as John of the Cross said, “The Bride keeps her secret by herself.” Therefore we need to heed Jesus’ commandment that reads,
“Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.” (Mt 7:6 ESV)

Susanne, I want to say this publicly.
All hell has come out against the unity you and I have pursued in the Spirit as we have fellowshipped together by HIS great grace working in us over the last two years. We have had wonderful revelations from our Father and also some terrible attacks that almost drove us apart. We have also learned what Jesus meant when he warned,
And through it all our Daddy has been exposing and rooting out all that is not of Christ and demanding transparency and honesty with one another. It is almost like we are a “lab experiment” with all heaven and hell watching. Like Jesus prayed, “Father, that they might be one, even as we are one, I in you and you in me, that the world might know that YOU have sent Me.” It has been this unity with the Father and the Son that we have been healed and that has given us a common clarity and has put us on the same page with the Spirit teaching us.
We did not get here by avoiding the root issues in our hearts. John wrote, “IF we are walking in the Light as He is in the Light, we will have fellowship with one another AND THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST WILL CLEANS US FROM ALL SIN.” Satan knows that there is power and clarity from the throne of God when just two saints live and move and have their being (singular) IN Christ. Jesus spoke of this power saying,
Only as we are of one heart and one accord in His Spirit will any two of us agree about anything. It is here that one can put to flight a thousand and two, ten thousand.
The closer we draw to His Light, the more that Light pierces through us like xrays and reveals what is in the hidden recesses of our hearts — our inward motivations and fears. We react when these things are revealed and sin happens and we have had to make a choice whether we would protect our darkness or expose it to His Light. Honesty and prayer has been the key to our growth In Christ. James wrote,
Transparency is hard, but it is worth it when two people are determined to abide in the Love of God and do what has to be done for the sake of that love and unity in HIS kingdom and not our own. But…
Yes, my dear sister, Let us walk together in His Light forever! Amen.

Thanks, Michael. I have been praying for you now for quite some time that He might strengthen you to do HIS will. Yes, that was a proper Scriptural confirmation of what has been going on in our lives. We cannot serve two masters, God and the devils inside our family members, can we? We need to be clear in all things and rather obey His voice than ANY other.

Susanne, I do appreciate and value your prayers for me. I know I need them. The test has been severe. When I saw Jesus’ word so clearly about loving family members more than HIM it really hit me why He said that. for Satan will use anyone that is not yielded to Christ to stop His will in us and our loved ones can be the most effective tools in his hands because they are so special to us. “Let the dead bury the dead!” Yes, WE MUST OBEY HIS VOICE AND HAVE A FEAR OF HIM MORE THAN THE FEAR OF MEN or relish the pleasures sin in unrighteousness.
Bless you my dear sister!

Thank you so much, my dear brother! Yes, it is extremely painful to say YES to God and NO to our family members, but this has been our test for some time now, right?
May He drive out the rest of the fear of men that might be still found inside our hearts. Amen.

Susanne, the way I see it, if we are going to write about walking in the light and transparency, we better stand by for His piercing light to shine upon us and the need to repent as He exposes what is not of Him in our hearts. I am with you — what the church needs is a proper fear of God so that we make no room for the flesh in us and invite the cross of Christ to cut deep in us.
“Hear, O Israel, you approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be you terrified because of them; For the LORD your God is he that goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.” (Deuteronomy 20:3-4 KJ2000)
