A Biblical Self Check
(Picture taken from https://goffwilson.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/self_check.jpg)

We should be aware that the devil does not sleep. Last Thursday as I checked my blog “Entering the Promised Land” on the cell phone when I was sitting at the hairdresser, I saw four ads popping up beneath one of my articles which I normally do not see when I am logged in on WordPress. One of these ads showed a sort of pornographic picture. We who may use WordPress for free, that means, all who are logged in on WordPress as bloggers ourselves won’t see those often offensive ads other visitors might be confronted with.

Just last week I also found several comments with links to mainly Asian pornographic sites in the spam file of my blog. These occurrences are truly both saddening and of satanic origin, for sure. Everything the devil wants to do is to discourage us so much that we cave in and stop telling the truth publicly. I just wanted you all to know that I won’t stop here because of such ridiculous attempts to drag the Christian message, aka the Gospel, through the mire. Since I believe what Satan meant for evil, God meant for good (cf. Gen 50:20). You will see. 😉

Whether it’s on Facebook or other public platforms and all through the media, the pornographic, violent, and consumption-oriented spirits behind these attacks (ads, posts, videos) obey the Prince of the Air who wants to destroy the work of God in the believer. However, the dark realm only achieves success in doing so as long as they find carnal lust and desires in worldly Christians. The crucified believer, instead, whose self was killed and who has risen to a completely new life in Christ cannot be touched by those attempts of the evil one any longer. The apostle Paul in his letter to the Galatians offers us a spiritual health check of sorts through which we could find out whether we are more carnal or more spiritual.

“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” (Gal 5:16-24 ESV)

We just read that those who are led by the Spirit (aka God’s sons, see Rom 8:14) are not under the law. That means, if we might feel accused after reading the first and particularly the middle part of this passage above, there might be one or more areas in our lives that have not been surrendered to God as yet. There is nothing to worry about, though, since God loves us just the way we are, even unconditionally. And that which is not yet perfect will be brought forth through the Holy Spirit’s work in us. Is there anything to do for us, though? Yes, it seems, since the apostle Paul admonished the Philippians and, more specifically, the Colossians in the following verses to

“…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” (Phil 2:12-13 ESV)

“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.
But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.” (Col 3:5-10 ESV)
