Baptism in the Holy Spirit, discerning the spirits, exhortation, experience, justification, killing sin, Matthew Poole, peace, prayer without ceasing, sanctification, sealed with the Holy Spirit, T.A. Sparks, the law, the new self, the old self
Theodore Austin-Sparks so aptly said,
The Holy Spirit’s method is to set His seal upon us as we move according to His leading; not according to our fancy, choice, aptitude, predilection or ambition. (1)
Well, what could that mean? The Bible tells us,
For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. (Rom 8:13-14 ESV)
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. (Gal 5:18 ESV)
If we delve into Matthew Poole’s Commentary on Romans chapter 8, verses 13 and 14, we might get a deeper understanding of what that might mean. We read the following.
Romans 8:13
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
If ye live after the flesh, ye shall die; viz. eternally, and never partake of the glorious resurrection before spoken of. The godly themselves need this caution; they must not think, that because they are elected and justified, &c., that therefore they may do and live as they list.
Through the Spirit; i.e. by the grace and assistance of the Spirit.
Mortify; i.e. kill and put to death. It is not enough to forbear the actings of sin, but we must kill and crucify it. Sin may be left upon many considerations, and yet not mortified.
Evil deeds are called
the deeds of the body, because the body is so instrumental in the doing thereof. There are some, that by body here do understand the corrupt nature, the same that before in many places he calls the flesh: this was called, Romans 8:6, the body of sin, and here it is called the body.
Ye shall live; viz. eternally.
Romans 8:14
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
This proves the latter part of the foregoing verse: Such as by the Spirit do mortify sin, shall live, for
they are the sons of God; and that appears, because they
are led by the Spirit of God. He doth not say, as many as live by the Spirit, but, as are led by the Spirit; to show (says one) that the Spirit must be the guide and ruler of our life, as the pilot is of the ship, and as a rider is of his horse. The phrase is borrowed (says another) either from those who are guided and directed as a blind man in his way; or from those who, wanting strength of their own, are borne and carried of others: so we are both ways led by the Spirit, for we can neither see our way, unless the Spirit direct us; nor have we strength to walk in it, unless the Spirit assist and draw us along. The Spirit leads and draws us irresistibly and necessarily, and yet not violently or against our wills; though we were unwilling before, yet we are made willing afterwards; so willing, that we desire and pray to be led by the Spirit. See Psalm 25:5 143:10 Song of Solomon 1:4.

Doesn’t that sound wonderful to our ears? If we are indeed led by God’s Spirit, we are sons of God and we are always free from the accusations of the law when we have been enabled to live in the presence of our Lord continually (cf. 2 Cor 3:17). We are even fellow heirs with Christ, heirs of everything that exists in the visible and invisible world, heirs of everything that is still to be created by God. Wow!! But… To be able to live in His presence 24/7, we need to give up our self-will, our plans, our old habits, and all logical reasoning whenever God’s guidance shows us another direction as we would have thought. Although God never forces His will on us, not following His leading means losing His peace for a certain time. However, even this lack of peace can be a sign from God to draw us back toward Him where LIFE is found. Yes, we may share divine, real and eternal life in His presence!
However, if we keep living after the flesh, we will remain in a spiritual condition of death which means to be separated from God’s restful presence. The devil with his cunning wiles will make sure that we think we are on the right path when we are inclined to believe that God who is love lets us live according to our own desires. Of course, we have a free will and can do what we want. But living in sin was and is man’s choice, never God’s! We must be cautious about supporting other Christians when we realize that they believe Jesus’ grace displayed on the cross had done EVERYTHING on our behalf so that there is now no longer to do anything for us.
Dear brothers and sisters, we need to be careful to discern between real agape love and mere humanistic tolerance. I do understand that someone who came to know legalism in church and finally could escape might be inclined to argue the converse afterwards. Yet the opposite of what was wrong can still be a wrong path. It is true that legalism tries to do God’s work without the Holy Spirit which is something that never works. Instead, people get discouraged and spiritually worn out after realizing that sin (seemingly) cannot be killed. It is also true that we cannot kill sin on our own. But Roman 8:13 told us, “…if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” On the one hand, Jesus’ work on the cross was to justify us by imputing His righteousness on us. On the other hand, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit INTO His temple, i.e., into our own body (cf. 1 Cor 6:19), which is the seal that makes us God’s possession, will eventually bring forth the new creation which is characterized by the mind of Christ. That means, the new self does not want to sin any longer. So, if there is still the desire to sin in our bones, it is the Old Adam nature which can only be killed by the Holy Spirit in a long and painful, sanctification process.
Now, let me return to the Holy Spirit’s guidance for a moment. Some people might have been taught that we need the Bible as our only guide. Of course, we need the Bible “for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” since the written Word of God “is breathed out by God” (see 2 Tim 3:16 ESV). But have you ever tried to find clear direction by following Scripture alone when your computer did not work, or worse, when your relationships did not turn out as they should have? 🙄 Don’t we rather pray and ask God directly for His help? 🙄 The Bible confirms us the following,
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. (Prv 3:5-6 ESV)
And our Lord told those who listened to Him,
“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.” (Jn 5:39-40 ESV)
Brothers and sisters, we have a free will to choose life over death. God who never changes already set this choice before us in the Old Testament where He said,
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.” (Dt 30:19-20 ESV)
God never desired law keepers, but a people who loved Him wholeheartedly and obeyed His Spirit’s nudging and promptings out of LOVE. This is agape love: first loving God and then loving our neighbors as ourselves with exactly that God-given love we have received before (see Rom 5:5). It does not work the other way round. If we begin with loving others by neglecting God’s will for our own life, we might end in humanistic tolerance, and finally in recognizing that we have been led astray.

Thank you, Susanne. Yes, God loves us and that love knows what is best for us. He is our loving Father and He wants us to have all good things. As a parent we know that some things our children get into are dangerous and can cause them great harm. For instance there are some household cleaning products that are colorful and look like pieces of candy. Children have found these under sinks and within reach and eaten them thinking that they were. Many were made sick and some of them died. Yet, they looked harmless and good to eat! This is the way the devil tempts us that he might bring us into spiritual sickness and death just as he did with Eve when she saw that the fruit of that tree was pleasant to look upon, good to eat and would make one wise, but God knew differently.
God knows what is beneficial for our spiritual growth and what is not and has given us His Spirit to lead us into all truth and to help us live lives that are filled with the Truth and Life of Jesus Christ. God is not the “tolerant” parent which we see all through western society today, letting their kids run rampant, causing all manner of confusion and chaos and eventually making life discussions that destroy theirs and the lives of others that come in touch with them. Prisons and drug rehab centers are full of such people.
Paul wrote that the law was given to keep and guide us until we come under the leading of the Holy Spirit. The law is there to condemn those who have not the Spirit and refuse to follow Him. BUT once we repent from our carnal ways and have received the Spirit of Christ within us, we have a NEW law put in our members, the law of LIFE IN Christ Jesus and under this law all that we do brings forth life, not death. The love of God in us is in concord with the Old Testament law and it is the Spirit of that law, not the letter that we now walk in. Paul taught us that against God’s love there is no law. Those who walk in the Spirit of Life and love of God have all things pertaining to life and righteousness working in them, but those who do not, but take God’s love as a license to do wrong, will have lives that are filled with sorrow and will end in death. As Christ followers with His Spirit in us our lives should be the outshining of Christ who lives in us, not lives that demonstrate the lusts of this fallen world.
“The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life.” “Choose life!”

Susanne, you are welcome. I am glad to hear that what I shared blessed you. I know that this issue you addressed here is not well understood in Christian circles. As you said, they tend to come down on the side or the law and condemnation or on the side of grace to the point that there is no manifestation of the life of Christ required of those who “believe.” But, like Paul wrote, “If any man be in Christ he is a NEW creation, old things are passed away and behold all things have become new.”
Bless you, dear sister,

Perfect timing for this. I mean great timing. Over the weekend I was feeling great joy and even enjoying some videos that was talking against legalism, which I know I have fallen into at times in my life. Most of what you said goes along with those videos. However they were teaching that Jesus did everything on the cross and to think we needed to do anything was to frustrate the grace of GOD. So yes your blog has good timing as that is the other extreme that you mentioned above that is also wrong.
Also my peace was gone on Monday and is back today. Which I am glad about I felt so far from GOD I didn’t like it at all. Although I thought the feeling of being far from GOD yesterday was mainly due to having listened to Galatians which scared me a bit as I think that is talking against legalism as well. So felt guilty for some of the legalistic things I have done in the past. I kept seeking answers specifically about Galatians 3:4 which scared me the most. I kept searching for answers to that verse and what it means. Asked several people and got different answers. I kept trying to pray about it. I think eventually the answer was given to me at least I think so. I was back at peace and should not have to be scared of that verse.
Any way this is still good timing as I have wondered and been trying to figure out how to be led by the spirit and not by my flesh which I know I do every now and again. I would love to stop living by my flesh too. When I listen to every voice in my head I get to thinking every thing I do is wrong, does not even matter what it is. I was under that for a while as some of my older comments may show. I know for one I need discernment on which voice in my head to follow as I want to only follow the voice of the Spirit.
Also I am glad to see that my desire to sin less or even not sin at all is a good sign even though I have a long way to go. I do find it funny that some times I get tempted with the strangest things. I have to ask my self why am I being temped by that as that is not appealing to me any way and wasn’t even when I was not a true Christian. One of the things I have done when I get tempted with something I did used to do is I will try to say thank you Lord for saving me from that. I will admit I do not even like being tempted so that might be a good sign as well. I know it is normal to be tempted though.

Thanks for your edifying input, Fred.
Once again, I want to encourage you to not worry any longer. It seems to me that you are too strict in judging, even condemning yourself. I would rather say, forget Galatians as long as it scares you. Drop it like everything else in the Bible, in videos, in books etc. that has a frightening effect on your soul.
Fred, you proved yourself as a great discerner as you saw the difference between legalistic and anti-legalistic (often so-called grace-) preaching. If that which these grace preachers stated was right, then the apostle Paul must have lied as he said,
“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” (Phil 2:12-13 ESV)
It is important to know that both THE WILL and THE WORK originate from God’s Holy Spirit. What these grace preachers who often know legalism and its bad effects on the soul tend to forget is that justification by faith is only one part, even only the first part of our salvation. Sanctification is a much longer process and there our “reactions” to God’s nudging and prompting will be tested.

Thank you. I am not sure if it was discernment or coming here and finding the truth. I don’t think all that was said in those videos was wrong as they do teach that GOD does not want you to stay a sinner. Thanks again for helping me see some of the errors in those videos. 🙂

I believe we can only find the truth if we seek it. And if we “know” immediately that what we heard/read was the truth, we have become discerners.

Yes Sue what a great post–I love that little quote from Tchividjan–I refrased it a bit–legalism = God WILL love us IF we obey–Christ = God will CAUSE us to obey BECAUSE He does love us–and I might add–we enjoy doing what He guides us to do–He is our loving Daddy.

Thank you for this clarification, Susanne. I was especially struck by your point that, “If we begin with loving others by neglecting God’s will for our own life, we might end in humanistic tolerance, and finally in the despair of having been led astray.”
A great many Christians today have fallen into this error. Few church leaders teach otherwise.
The culture views “tolerance” (rather than truth) as the ultimate goal. Instead of promoting open discussion, tolerance is now understood to require silence — especially by Christians. Merely sharing the Gospel with those who do not agree with us is increasingly viewed as intolerant.
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, but through Me” (John 14: 6). Sadly, the darkness is encroaching.
With love,
A. ❤
