discerning the spirits, exhortation, experience, God's guidance, good works, heart, mind, T.A. Sparks, the new self, the old self
During the last few months I got more and more aware that this whole world is in enmity with God. Just yesterday I watched a female teacher walking in the street with about 20 boys and girls who were heading toward school again. Having taught children myself, I know how difficult it is today to make yourself heard (not only by kids). It seems that the (fallen) human mind is so busy with thinking about itself and how they can get their way with others that they hardly perceive the needs of other people, even of those close to them. It seems to me that most people do not know that our mind and heart naturally live in rebellion with God, with laws of any kind, and with authorities like parents, grandparents, teachers, and official institutions. Even if our old nature submits to authorities, do we always obey out of love for God and others or, rather, isn’t it the fear of punishment that makes us often do what was demanded?
One might argue here that my observations are a bit hard-edged and they are. But sharing these thoughts with my husband today, I believe I am not that wrong here. Paul tells me quite often about how difficult it is to trust anyone in professional life nowadays. There is a handful of bosses, staff members, and students you know you can rely on anytime. But the major part of apprentices and co-workers do their own thing by taking the law into their own hands. As soon as you turn your back on them, they somehow spit you in the face by ignoring what you told them to do. If you ask them about their defiance later, they look for excuses or even lie at you. As for me, I too know that it has become ‘normal’ to browse the internet for many an employee on the job, during a time where they are paid for doing their work. This is this world and we won’t change it. However, is it Christlike if a Christian does the same things? Or when they often do some chitter chatter about their co-workers and neighbors?
Dear reader, it is primarily obedience in what we might call little things that counts for God, not the serving up of big things we might do for mankind on a grand scale. If we do not submit to Him in our sometimes pretty boring everyday life, we do not need to believe that He would be interested in our other ‘bigger’ good works ‘for Him’ we chose on our own. God does not need self-seekers whose minds and hearts are conformed to this world. Instead, He wants a people who loves and obeys Him, even if nobody on earth ever comes to know about their obedience. It is a heavenly life in the Spirit God has in mind for all of us. The problems that arise and the blessings that eventually follow when we try to submit to God’s leading that pulls us AWAY from the spirit of this world, even away from this religious Christian world, T.A. Sparks aptly put this way.
“To the flesh that is not easy. To go on with God and have nothing to show for it, never to be able to have the work written up in the papers, to publish no reports, nor statistics, and yet to know in your heart of hearts that, although it is hidden, something is going on, and that you cannot do otherwise than you are doing, is far from being a path of ease to the flesh.”
“It is a testing way, but, blessed be God, if we do endure the testing and go on patiently with Him, in His time, when that flesh has been finally laid low; when the voice of natural ambition is no longer sounding and having influence, and we are now utterly at the place where if things are not going to be of the Lord then there is not going to be anything at all, the Lord has a free way, and He is able to indicate that all the time something has been going on. He shows how He has been at work, and how that in time there will be manifested a work of God, a work that shall have such a large percentage of spiritual value and meaning in it that you are very glad, after all, that you walked with God and not with men in the work of God.” (1)
May God have a free way with us when our old self with its desires, finally, has taken the back seat.

Sue that is a very correct article that you have produced here–No need to appologize at all–I read a lot of Thomas Torrance stuff + T Austin Sparks and they both acknowledge that our minds even our hearts must be transformed to think and feel the very thoughts and feelings of God our Father —To hell with our selves and to heavenly enthronement to the Being of God in us to deliver us from our distorted selves!

Susanne,
Long time no read! Good to hear from you again.
It seems things are pretty much the same everywhere. Work ethic seems to be a rare find here in Argentina. Technology only makes the problem more apparent. It used to be the coffee or smoking break every hour. Now it’s Facebook or any other techno-distraction. At my son’s swimming pool, we caught the lifeguard checking his smartphone.
You’ve hit the nail on the head. The root of the problem is our selfishness. We want the best for our own selves, in fact we feel entitled to enjoyment ad infinitum. And we don’t care about the others.
Without the fear of the Lord every value slowly falls apart.
Time to arise and shine, sister. As the world embraces darkness more and more, we have been strategically placed to be lighthouses to the world.
Isaiah 60:2-3 For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth,
And deep darkness the people;
But the Lord will arise over you,
And His glory will be seen upon you.
The Gentiles shall come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.

Hi Carina,
Thank you for your comment, my sister. 🙂
Indeed, I do know this lifeguard problem myself. I am a passionate swimmer and I have observed this saddening development over years, not only in public pools, even at the lakeside. Although there are webcams at the pools which are further away through which the lifeguards can watch the people swim, they cannot see everything if they do not walk around constantly and look what happens under water, too. And as to observing the swimming rules like not jumping into the smaller pools, many lifeguards do not seem to care, either. Even if they are confronted with transgression, they are tempted to ignore it. THAT got me pretty mad lately as I had rebuked teenagers for their misbehavior. They seemed to have listened to me until I turned my back on them. Then they laughed and did it again. Only if I looked directly into their eyes, they did not dare to do it again. So I informed one lifeguard about these things and he admitted that it was not allowed what they had done (you could read ‘Jumping is forbidden’ on many signs around the pool and elsewhere), BUT he did not say anything to them and left. It is so saddening that you hardly find any authority nowadays! 😦
Yes, the fear of the Lord is needed, Carina! Interesting that you mentioned it like Michael in his comment. 😉
I love lighthouses, my sister! XD

Susanne, it was good to read this post and that Father has given you as He has spoken to your heart. I also have been observing the fruit of the spirit of this age working in every social level and in every institution of our American society. The conflict that is going on in Washington, D.C. as it strangles our own government with rebellion is all too evident. All people have spiritual hearing, the trouble is that most do not know what spirit they are listening to and following as they fulfill the lusts and longings of their own fleshly hearts. Consider the words of warning of these two passages…
I would say that these describe the spirit that drives the world systems and the hearts of men in the hour in which we live. We see evil doers waxing worse and worse deceiving and being deceived just as Paul prophesied. We who would not be of this dark age do well to remember Jesus’ final prayer…
We see the spirit of this age being manifest in the corrupted governments of men at the very top right on down to the rebellion we see in the hearts of of those around us as they despise authority on every front. Some of us even have a form of outward religion, even the most “devout” Christians, but through the rebellion that lies in our hearts we deny the power of the Spirit of Christ from reigning in our hearts. Jesus prayed, “Sanctify them in the truth; your Word is truth.” While being tempted to follow His own fleshly desires Jesus told the Great Deceiver, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” We are sanctified as we live IN the Truth, by “every word” that He speaks to our hearts, moment by moment, in our every day lives. We ignore His whisperings and warnings at our own peril. As we do listen and obey our lives manifest the Truth and that Truth is the very Son of God living within us. The very life of Jesus Christ is God’s only Standard by which we will be judged.
Going to church will not save us. Jesus said to the Samaritan woman at the well, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father… But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.” (John 4:21-23, ESV2011)
Our Daddy is still seeking those who would worship Him as they live the Life of Truth, Jesus Christ, before Him. Thank you, dear sister for sharing what He has put on your heart with us.

I am glad you liked what you read, Michael. I also believe that rebellion is found everywhere, esp. in politics and economy. The leadership is not any better than the average citizen without the fear of God.
These four Sciptures you pasted perfectly emphasize these exceeding problems we are confronted with today. Regarding all these corrupt governments of this world, I believe more and more scandals will be revealed publicly in the days ahead. Without God’s Spirit in us Whom we obey, we are lost in transgression (not translation 😉 ).
Thanks for sharing your very insightful comment, my brother! ⭐

Another wonderful post, Susanne, and perfectly timed. The siren song of “great things for God” has been a torment to me for many years. I have been searching for a ministry in which to serve, since I moved to this rural area. As I am more familiar with urban needs, I have been at something of a loss. But I am at long last convinced, God has me exactly where He wants me.
With love,

Thank you for your encouraging words, dear Anna. ❤
I too believe that God knows exactly where He puts us. It is not easy to accept that He is not interested in our (independent) doing(s) for Him, more in our simple being IN Him, something only He can bring forth in us through regeneration. Actually, I do know how difficult it is to wait on God and to accept feelings of worthlessness that arise if I cannot do ANYTHING! 😛
With love,
Susanne ❤ ❤ ❤

“Even if our old nature submits to authorities, do we always obey out of love for God and others or, rather, isn’t it the fear of punishment that makes us often do what was demanded?”
WOW! That has been so ME. I never saw how twisted I had developed myself – thinking I “knew” so that even God could not school me. I did not see that at all about myself but in His mercy over the last few years I am seeing the tip of that iceberg 😦 Very ugly and yet so glad the Lord is showing me -ME. Something triggered at about 14 years of age that I refused to submit to anyone and that remained hidden until only a few years ago and is now progressively being shown to me. Devastating at 62 yo now. Though I was at least converted in 1976 I have backslid many times. I had believed that I just could not do this christian thing so why be a hypocrite?? One of the first “covert enemy plants” was due to a “word” I probably heard wrong? from a friend back in ’76 and only could recall ” You will be cut off” and for most of my life that record played over and over when I fell or could not relate to the people at whatever church I was attending and I just gave up over and over- BUT GOD! THEN I have just recently fallen in such shameful ways it has been hard to believe I am even saved some days, but between you and Michael and the saints commenting I am seeing a different picture and my hope is starting to come alive. I also do not feel afraid as I did for not being in the “church” structure as such. I never thought I fit in and never made any lasting friends. I wish I could say it was because I was in Christ that I was rejected but more likely my “know it all” critical nature all along 😦 – I also developed many fears that I would be rejected anyway so often just hid my SELF away…Thanks be to God He does not let me hide from Him 🙂
Love you in Christ and appreciate your candid Spirit-led posting! XOXO…
I tried to comment when you first shared this but my pc froze and would not allow me. My sister gave me an ipad and so I have been able to post comments again lol. I maybe overdid it on Life’s Clouds recently though. The “darkness” scriptures are very helpful to me presently and Michael shared a boatload 🙂

Thank you for your edifying words, Judi.
It seems your experiences with the church crowd, at large, were not that encouraging. Thanks be to God that we only need Christ and the Holy Spirit in order to find our individual spirit-led path in life! 🙂
As for being ‘cut off’, I was reminded me of the following Scripture, which taken out of context, might seem frightening to some. I thought about apostle Paul’s warning against heathen (Christian) pride and unbelief, that is.
“They [The Jews] were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. So do not become proud, but fear. For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off. And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.” (Rom 11:20-24 ESV)
We still live in a time of grace. Our God who is patient and steadfast in His love knew beforehand that we all stumble and fall at times. As long as we repent by turning away from our old and sinful ways, there is no need to fear being rejected by God. Just think about the prodigal son and how he was finally received by his father!
Love in Christ to you, too,
Susanne

Thank you for such a compassionate reply. “Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness.” Yes there is a condition of continuing in His kindness isn’t there?

You are very welcome, Judi.
Yes, it appears to be a condition here. God so loved the world… but the world has not yet been converted to Him by receiving His Son in their hearts. If we have received Him, the struggle begins. Will we go on when times get hard… and harder? Or would we rather leave Him? I never believe someone who says they love the Lord, never have had any doubts, and that everything has been all wonderful since they began to walk with Him. These might be the words from a beginner. But the longer we walk with Him, the more doubts might arise inside us, doubts which only He can remove from our hearts and minds. These doubts are not new, they were always there under a cover of many subconscious layers. But when His scrutinizing light enter our unknown depths, it gets more and more painful until we accept His chiseling work in our souls and spirits. Not fun!
Regarding deceitful kisses of an enemy, I was immediately reminded of people who make you false compliments in order to ellict some information, money or else from you. You perceive their cheesiness at once although they seem to be ‘nice’. I hate that anti-Christ spirit that seems to be so ‘Christian’ at times!
