Have you ever felt enlivened although you did not eat anything that gave your weak body some strength back again? I have and I really wondered… Two days ago I had been struggling with another attack of summer cholera (no details here). 😛 After prayer with Michael Clark, nausea left rather quickly and in the evening I could even get out of bed again which seemed to be impossible to me before. Well, after a precious time I could spend with God in silent prayer on one of our balconies as the sun was setting, I felt much stronger and thought I could write another blog post if He inspired me to do so. But God’s leading, you know… 😉 No blog post, yet the urge to do something for God in order to help someone out of a tricky situation. It was not easy for me to obey here, but as soon as I had done so, though, I felt so ALIVE as if I had not been sick before at all. Quite the contrary! 😊 This experience reminded me of two parts in the NT as follows. As Jesus would have this very deep talk with the woman at the well, his disciples who brought some food could not understand what Jesus had eaten as they told Him,
“Rabbi, eat.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.” (Jn 4:31-34 ESV)
The other part in Scripture was Jesus’ first temptation in the wilderness.
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Mt 4:1-4 ESV)
What was wrong about the devil quoting Scripture? The Bible in itself cannot be wrong since it was God-breathed, however, these Bible verses had not been made alive by God, i.e., they had not come/proceeded out of His mouth at THAT particular time. But nonetheless, dear brothers and sisters, the devil spoke the truth! Yet it was not God’s timing to do so. Do you see the problem here? ‘Bible Christians’ who take the Bible as a manual apart from God’s speaking and leading can be as wrong as someone who claims, “The Bible is full of lies since God’s promises do not work for me! He does not hear all of my prayers [in my time, I would add].”
Rereading this story about the woman at the well and her encounter with the Lord, I wondered about the chronological order of how the Spirit of God works with and in us later. At first Jesus told her that she needed to drink spiritual water, that is, she had to receive the Spirit of God (1) so that she could worship the Father in Spirit and Truth (2). So many Christians have the truth of the Bible, call God their Father, but they have no witness in their own spirit that they are the children of God who may call Him tenderly ‘Abba’ or Daddy, too. From hence, real worship is not possible for them. They can sing hymns and songs to Him, but the label ‘Father’ remains empty for them. That is so sad! 😦
Without receiving the Holy Spirit in our hearts, we can neither love God nor our neighbors with this particular love received from God before. We can do what is humanly possible, but not more than this. The third step after receiving the Spirit of God, through whom we may worship God in our own spirits, is to do the will of God (3), that is, we are enabled to eat the ‘bread’ that comes from God, the bread which nourishes our spirit like nothing else. How do we get there? Instead of trying to tell you more in my own words, I decided to offer you now another devotional by Oswald Chambers in which he, in my humble opinion, made an excellent job at describing how we may get closer and closer to God. Chambers wrote the following,
When thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and pray to thy Father which is in secret. — Matthew 6:6
“Jesus did not say — “Dream about thy Father in secret,” but “pray to thy Father in secret.” Prayer is an effort of will. After we have entered our secret place and have shut the door, the most difficult thing to do is to pray; we cannot get our minds into working order, and the first thing that conflicts is wandering thoughts. The great battle in private prayer is the overcoming of mental wool-gathering. We have to discipline our minds and concentrate on wilful prayer.
“We must have a selected place for prayer and when we get there the plague of flies begins — This must be done, and that. “Shut thy door.” A secret silence means to shut the door deliberately on emotions and remember God. God is in secret, and He sees us from the secret place; He does not see us as other people see us, or as we see ourselves. When we live in the secret place it becomes impossible for us to doubt God, we become more sure of Him than of anything else. Your Father, Jesus says, is in secret and nowhere else. Enter the secret place, and right in the centre of the common round you find God there all the time. Get into the habit of dealing with God about everything. Unless in the first waking moment of the day you learn to fling the door wide back and let God in, you will work on a wrong level all day; but swing the door wide open and pray to your Father in secret, and every public thing will be stamped with the presence of God.”

Yea Sue I have found it much more profitable to talk to Dad about my needs and feelins and to let Him know how willing I am to submitt to His directions–Then to endlessly study the bible like as if I am trying to figure things out–Dad says stop studying and lets go forth and I will let you participate in My divine activities.

Great comment, Ken… “Then to endlessly study the bible like as if I am trying to figure things out–Dad says stop studying and lets go forth and I will let you participate in My divine activities.”
That verse in 2 Tim. 2:16, “Study to show yourself approved unto God…” has nothing to do with studying the Bible as it is so often misused. Rather it should read, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed…” The true meaning of this verse seems to fit with what God has shown you. 🙂

Very helpful contribution, Michael! It amazes me how God always reminds you of the proper Scriptures that substantiate our experiences with Him.

Susanne, thank you for your encouragement and letting me know that my prayers for you were answered. As of late I have felt so “blank”… no inspiration to write on my blog and even flat lined during times of fellowship. Maybe it is because of the “flies” that come buzzing around when I seek to pray or get alone with God.
“And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them,” (Luke 4:42, ESV2011)
ARG!!! It happened to me again today. I was trying to be alone in the Spirit and here came the flies… this time it was well meaning people that wanted to talk with me. I can see why Jesus got up early and went away into the mountains to a lonely place to pray (see Mark 1:35, 6:46). We can’t give up! We need to go into our SECRET place and CLOSE THE DOOR against the “flies.” It is almost impossible to get alone with God when there are any people around us, yet like Jesus, we need these times to get spiritually recharged again. We also need to “take every thought captive.” Our thoughts about the things of this world can come crashing in on our time with God as well. Yet we have this promise,
”You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” (Isa 26:3, ESV2011)
“For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” (Rom 8:6, ESV2011)
God bless you with His Spirit richly in the days ahead, my dear sister, and thanks for all your prayers for me. 🙏👍

You are very welcome, Michael. These two Scriptures that point to His peace were timely for me, my brother. Trying to set my mind on Him and His Spirit, again and again. It is a struggle, indeed, but He is worth it all!
As you might know, I have struggled a lot with this getting-away-from-people-thing lately, too. Just yesterday (and the day before) as I really needed a refreshing prayer break, it seemed hell broke lose. Whether there is someone on the phone (landline AND cell phone) who urgently ‘needs’ me or someone who rings the bell for some other reasons (incessant chitter chatter, something I really hate!), I saw how hard it is at times to shut people (loved ones, friends, and neighbors) completely OUT of my secret place with God.
I know God’s leading is not predictable and He CAN nudge us to leave prayer in order to help others, but yesterday as I answered a phone call by someone of who I had not answered their phone call a few days ago already, I saw my mistake immediately. Tired and exhausted I stood before the phone and thought, “Well… God allowed me last time to not answer them. It would not be nice to do so, again.” MY thoughts, Michael! Not God’s! After a few seconds as I had listened to some blah blah blah and to a request I could not accept because of my faith, I got more and more mad at that person (the spirit in them) that I finally had to say, “Good Bye” and left. However, I had lost God’s peace because of this tiny (?) disobedience to NOT answer the call, once again. Shouldn’t we care for our families and neighbors? Yes, we should. But even THIS, in HIS timing. Actually, this is a hard lesson to learn for me! Ha! I was just reminded of these verses:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.” (Prv 3:5-8 ESV)
Boy! That says a lot! Not acting according our own thoughts, trusting God even against reason every time, not following others in their sinful ways (all ways that are against His leading are sinful, I believe)… and then our bodies should be healed, too, if I am not wrong with my interpretation here. What do you think, Michael?
Every blessing from God! ⭐

Thank you very much, Michael. ❤
No, I am not surprised, but I hate the devil’s devices, i.e., discouragement, doubts, confusion, false accusations etc.
We can only pray and wait for deliverance.

Would you take a moment, please, to explain again life “in” Christ? Michael refers to it frequently. But for some reason, I find the concept elusive. Does it mean submission to Christ in all things? Or is the distinction between an inner reality and an outer appearance of holiness? Both?
Thank you for another insightful post, Susanne.
Love and friendship to you and Michael both,
A. ❤ ❤ ❤

Anna, I recalled that I wrote about this heavenly spiritual condition IN Christ before, but I need to admit that has been very difficult to describe. Here’s an excerpt:
“Then we will see God everywhere, in everything, and in everyone. And then we have really entered the kingdom of God, the Promised Land, and nothing can “separate us from the love of God IN Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom 8:38 ESV) – [Emphasis in caps mine].
If you have time and want to read this quote in context, i.e., the whole article, here’s the link.
Love and friendship to you,
Susanne ❤ ❤ ❤

Anna, as I was just reading TAS’ devotional from August 29, I found an interesting quote, too. Sparks said,
“The sum of everything in the new creation is in Christ, or, to put that in another way, it is outside of man himself. It is apart from man, and it always will be. Although Christ, the sum of the new creation, may be in us, that new creation will remain in Christ, and we are only in it by reason of our union with Him.”
